Olivia Johson
2026 Ellen Brewer Scholarship Winner
February 15, 2026
To the NCAFCS Awards Committee:
It is with pleasure that I support the recommendation of Olivia Johson for the 2026 Ellen Brewer Scholarship. Oliva is a 4th year undergraduate student pursuing a degree in Child Development and Family Studies (CDFS) in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) at North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University (NCAT). Olivia is an honor CDFS major with a 3.1 GPA and participating in the NCAFCS 2026 Annual Conference would be a great opportunity for her to network with other students and FCS professionals.
I have had the privilege of serving as Oliva’s professor, advisor and mentor in the CDFS program. Olivia has been a student in three of my classes: FCS 331 – Family Systems, FCS 422 – Parent/Child Relations and FCS 428 – Family Life Education. Over the past four years, I have been able to observe Olivia demonstrate growth, development and knowledge in the CDFS subject matter. In the classroom, she works well in small and large groups maintaining a positive attitude and disposition with her peers. Olivia consistently submitted assignments on time in a professional manner, displaying professional written and oral communication skills. She was always a pleasure to have in class and participating in class discussions.
In Spring 2025, Olivia was a part of the third cohort of FCS Leadership Scholars. This was a part of a USDA Capacity Building Grant of which I am the principal investigator. Oliva was an active participant in the scholars’ program working closely with her peers here at NCAT as well as mentorship with other scholars on the project. Engaged as a leadership scholar demonstrates Olivia’s willingness to learn and grow in the field of family and consumer sciences and bridge this knowledge with other FCS students.
In sum, Olivia Johnson is a hardworking and determined young scholar. She possesses integrity and professionalism and certainly worthy of the NCAFCS Ellen Brewer Scholarship. It is with confidence that I support this nomination that Olivia will represent this honor and organization well.
Professionally Submitted,
